Description
I am fortunate to not only have gorgeous ironwood trees growing on my property, but also all around the wilder areas next to where I live.
The Desert Ironwood tree is known for its hard wood and having many trunks with an extensive root system. Desert Ironwood is a very important keystone species in this most diverse of all the American deserts and is protected by law.
Almost every year they bloom the most beautiful delicate, pinkish-purply flowers that look a lot like grapes hanging from their branches. This tree in particular is my favorite to photograph. This capture took place May 12, 2020, in the late afternoon, with the setting sun shining through her branches. I call her the Queen because she is the largest, most beautiful Ironwood tree in the area. She resides next to the historically significant Vekol Wash and is so tall that her color stands out radiantly, seen from as far away as my back porch. When she is so adorned, you must approach cautiously as her presence is vibrating loudly with the hypnotic drone of at least a thousand honeybees or more. If you are respectful of her Majesty and express your gratitude in adoring silence, you will be honored as well with her peace, grace and beauty. But no matter how many photos she lets me take home, none will ever compare with the experience itself.
