Description
This is a photograph of a coyote (Canis latrans) taken by my outdoor remote cam on the evening of April 5, 2019. I often manipulate these photos digitally for artistic effect. While it looks like the animal is in a spotlight, this is an illusion created by the infrared technology used in these cameras. The animal’s eyes are bright due to the infrared light reflecting off the the tapetum lucidum in its corneas. It might be looking straight at the camera but it’s probably only noticing the few small red LEDs visible from the outside. The resulting capture lacks the higher resolution of daytime photos. Therefore, artistic enhancement to some degree is necessary to bring out the contrast and the highlights in the imagery. live in a rural area in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona about 50 miles south of Phoenix, and never get tired of seeing these beautiful, legendary icons of the west.
