Description
It had been a hot day in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona on June 19, 2019 about 50 miles south of Phoenix. I only go out after sundown. My wait was rewarded with the rare sight of a Mourning Dove (Zenaida macroura) and a Red-Tailed Hawk (Buteo jamaicensis) sharing a common perch on the top of a utility pole and wire. I’ve seen this before - doves and hawks perched close together. The hawk is usually a buteo - meaning not likely to feast on smaller birds as the accipiter raptors do. These particular birds do not seem bothered by the company. However, the human observing them was experiencing some frustration with the fact that they were so far away and that the light was dwindling fast in the hour of blue. Nevertheless, the sunset left gorgeous pink hues in the sky for a background which seemed to accentuate the halo effect around the birds. Is it aura or is it noise? Does it really matter? Peaceful interspecies interaction is a beautiful sight - no matter the limitations imposed by our own eyes, camera lenses, and preconceived notions of what makes good art. That’s the message I hope to communicate.
