Description
This is a still from a remote night-cam video of a wild javelina, also known as collared peccary, in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona. A whole herd has been visiting my home lately due to the triple digit temperature of the desert summer for the precious water I keep in ground-level birdbaths. it looks like these animals are in a spotlight, but this is an illusion created by the infrared technology used in these cameras. The animal’s eyes are bright due to the infrared light reflecting off the the tapetum lucidum in its corneas. It might be looking straight at the camera but it’s probably only noticing the few small red LEDs visible from the outside. The resulting capture lacks the higher resolution of daytime photos. Therefore, usually some artistic enhancement is is necessary to bring out the contrast and the highlights in the imagery. If you want to learn about javelina and why a peccary is not a pig, watch my popular YouTube video on the topic here:
