I got the idea for this digitally manipulated photo of a diamondback rattlesnake in the wild for a contest on a subject depicting “heat.” LIve, dangerous animals and other objects like exposed electrical wires are said to be “red hot.” In addition, cracks in the soil show an area in drought. This photograph was taken on August 9, 2007 in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona, USA about 50 miles south of Phoenix along the banks of the Vekol Wash. That’s right in the middle of monsoon season, and for cracks to be showing up in the Vekol definitely says that we hadn’t had much rain yet. Only a very long hot drought can do that to a place already known for its “dry heat.” So the literal and metaphorical interpretation of this image really doubles down on the meaning. Finally, red is the warmest color in the visible spectrum. After applying a red filter to this perfect image, we have a RED HOT TRIPLE THREAT in more ways than one!
Judy Kennedy (a visionary wayward muse) is a nature mystic and disabled visual media artist specializing in the Arizona Sonoran Desert. The Sonoran Desert is the United States' most ecologically diverse desert - especially in the state of Arizona. With an abounding love for her home, Judy's artwork and videos mostly feature wildlife in its natural setting with accompanying landscapes and skyscapes as varied and unique as her stylistic expressions. She serves this inimitable beauty and hopes that her art inspires others in their own conservation efforts. Judy is also a versatile writer of creative nonfiction and a composer of music which can be heard in many of her videos. Her YouTube channel alone has well over 1100 subscribers. ...
