Description
This is a looking down onto the top of a Red-Barrel Cactus in bloom. The thorns of this cactus are deep red and the flower bright yellow giving it an awesome contrast. These flowering cacti are among the largest in the North American deserts and can live up to 100 years. The flowers blooming at the top eventually become delicious fruit feeding all kinds of wildlife - even humans. The genus name “Ferocactus” means fierce or wild cactus. This picture was taken in on May 7, 2014 in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona about 50 miles south of Phoenix.
