Description
My trail cam caught this Great Horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) getting a drink of water from my ground level birdbath under a creosote bush by a red barrel cactus. The tapetum lucidum, a layer of tissue behind the retina, is a retroreflector. It increases any light available to the photoreceptors, making the eyes seem to glow for extra dramatic effect. The photo is slightly enhanced for better definition, and was taken the evening of June 27, 2018 at 11:29 pm. The location is about 50 miles southwest of Phoenix in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona, where the camera also recorded the temperature at 92 degrees Fahrenheit. No wonder he/she was thirsty!
