Description
The Sonoran Desert Desert of Arizona is home to many dove species. In spring and summer, a proliferation of white-winged doves populate the area as they are important pollinators of several desert plants - especially cacti. When they return from wintering grounds in Mexico they make grand pronouncements and become neighborhood bullies to all the smaller birds at my bird feeders. Yet this affords me great opportunity to photograph them - like this portrait I captured on April 29, 2019. This dove was perched on an overhang outside my window waiting for an opportunity to barge in and assert his dominance at one of the over-crowded feeders. The blue rings around his eyes reminded me of the grammy award winning song made popular by the singer Crystal Gayle in the 70s - “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue.” Indeed - but they’re still beautiful!
