On a beautiful spring morning (March 18, 2019, in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona, I decided to check out the wildflower bloom on the other side of the hill where I live, and this is part of what I saw. The largest mountain in the background is Table Mountain in northern Pinal County which essentially separates the central valley from the Tohono O’odham Indian Nation. If you look very closely, the tops of major powerline can barely be seen. Anyway, to the south of the mountains is Mexico. In the foreground gorgeous Desert Globemallows are beginning to bloom near a desert arroyo (wash). This part of the desert is full of dead trees and branches of Palo Verde, Mesquite, and Ironwood - most of them hidden by the verdant growth seen here. A few are sticking out, and they are the visual reminders of the ever present cycles of drought and flooding in the Sonoran Desert. But this wooden debris makes for great habitat and cover for the wildlife that has to survive these climate extreme...
