Description
This water bird, the American Coot (Fulica Americana) is a peculiar bird for many reasons. It has red eyes which contrast beautifully with its jet black head. And it’s almost more like a land-loving chicken than a water fowl because its feet are not webbed. This particular bird is part of a lovely pair that I photographed at Ayer’s Lake at Boyce-Thompson Arborteum - an Arizona state park just outisde Superior. It is literally an oasis in the desert, less than an hour’s drive from Phoenix and Tucson. It’s definitely worth a visit because of the variety of desert plants, terrains, and tours. Ayer’s Lake lies at the foot of the awe-inspiring cliffs of Picket Post Mountain, but is a relatively easy hike from the entrance of the park. This riparian habitat seems to be the centerpiece of the area, and there are lots of shady trees to sit under and watch these hilarious birds and other wildlife do their thing for hours on end!
