Arroyos or desert washes are dry creeks, streams, and gulches that only fill up and flow after substantial rain or flooding. Therefore they make ideal places to hike and explore because of an abundance of flora growing in and around them making such areas like extended desert oases with plenty of nice shade. A common sight, especially after monsoon flooding, is exposed roots extending out the side of the banks from the trees growing on top. This is one of three photos recently taken in August of 2019 in the Sonoran Desert about 50 miles south of Phoenix, Arizona, USA. It is called snake root simply because it looks a snake. The seed pods laying on the ground around it are from Palo Verde trees that bloomed beautiful yellow flowers this last spring.
