Description
It is rare to catch a Datura bloom fully mature and open in the daytime. But I came across this one around 8:00 a.m. on the bank of a dry desert wash on November 4, 2018. Perhaps it was because it was so late in the season or because we’d gotten so much rain this year. Anyway I was so happy to discover this “last hurrah!”
Sacred Datura (Datura wrightii) is poisonous to ingest because it is in the nightshade family. Only trained professionals should handle and process the plant for its medicinal and ritual properties. The beautiful flowering shrub behind it is a female Hackberry bush (Celtis pallida) whose bright red berries are edible and quite delicious!
