Description
On a leisurely Sunday drive in the desert, we came across an old farm about 50 miles south of Phoenix, Arizona. It was surrounded by present day agricultural fields, mostly cotton and pecan orchards, and beautiful native Mesquite trees in bloom as seen in this picture. Today’s Sonoran Desert farms rely heavily on the Central Arizona Canal and innovative irrigation methods developed by the Ak Chin Indians. Those methods were probably not available in this farm’s day. No telling what kind of seasons it saw when there was no such remedy for desert drought. Was there ever a well? How did they manage? What was the purpose of this old structure? What stories happened here? Today, neglect and the extreme heat of the Sonoran Desert are reclaiming the materials. I wonder where the memories have gone?
