Description
I took this digitally and artistically enhanced photograph from a moving vehicle on the Bush Highway. This is Red Mountain, also known as Mount MacDowell, Fire Rock, and Gunsight Butte. It is located on the eastern edge of the valley on Fort MacDowell Indian tribe land and is 2830 feet high. It is a difficult climb, but I did it - 30 years ago with some friends. Today it is off limits per the Fort McDowell Indian Tribe — for hiking at least, but not for looking! Truly one of the most stand-out landmarks of the Phoenix Metropolitan area, this striking red rocky mountain overlooks the Salt River - a popular recreational destination in the Tonto National Forest. I’d spent the day there with my husband enjoying the water sounds on the river, the beautiful scenery and illustrious Sonoran Desert wildlife - including the famous Salt River Wild Horses - one of the few remaining truly wild horse herds in North America. To learn more about these magnificent creatures, please see my video memorializing this event which also features a bald eagle and other migratory birds. It also features my unique Valentine-themed artwork inspired by a heart made out of stones we found on Pebble Beach by the river. Here is a link to the video with this remarkable story on my YouTube channel: https://youtu.be/UeYZmdoXHOw. Enyoy!
