Description
Out in northwestern Pinal County near Table Top Mountain (in the background) there struggles an ancient giant cactus (Cereus giganteus) otherwise known as the Saguaro. I named it poor and pretty for a reason. I called it poor because it’s obviously suffered some kind of injury in the past that killed off its head exposing its ribs prematurely. I called it pretty because the deformity is interesting and makes for some unique aesthetically pleasing art I would say, as in this instance. It’s as if it’s trying out a weird new punk-like hairdo or something. Anyway, I think it’s still incredibly photogenic, and a good example showing how parts of the cactus can die before other parts. This is well-known to Sonoran Desert residents who have lived here long enough to suffer the rare freeze in winter. Freezes cause major deformities in saguaros, but I’m not sure if that’s what happened here. I have a query off to an expert to find out. Meanwhile, enjoy this “poor pretty” saguaro in the desert!
