Description
This is Victor or Victoria (I really don’t know the sex) who lives in this giant saguaro cactus on a hill by my home. He’s a Western Screech Owl which is considerably smaller than the Great Horned. It would have to be to fit in these cactus holes! Anyway, he’s usually only out during dawn or dusk, so I feel very lucky to get any photograph at all when I can. This is one of those times shot with an older camera on October 4, 2017, around 6:30 p.m. Even standing close to his saguaro, it’s still some distance to his burrow because it’s near the top. With the added element of the blue hour, the resolution is seldom enough for me to leave the photo as is. Therefore in this treatment with an ultraviolet filter, I’ve inducted him into my “Garden of the Ultraviolet” series of desert flora or fauna depicted in that glorious spectrum. He is all eyes in this photo, fully alert, so I almost named it “Owl is all eyes” - when they’re fully open at least!
