Many kinds of prickly pear cacti flourish in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona. Both the pads and the fruit are edible and are made into many products - some with medicinal value. The most popular varieties produce beautiful yellow and red blooms during spring and summer. One native bee that dotes on these blooms which are critical to its survival is the Leaf-Cutter Bee. Here you see it bathing in the golden pollen and nectar to gather as much as they can for carrying back to its underground nest. There they will mix it with leaf parts previously cut to bind and strengthen the cells where their offspring grow.
