Description
A friend and I were hiking past this beautiful big mesquite tree out in the desert, and we just decided to peek inside it. We did not expect to find a Greater Roadrunner in there, but we did. While I’ve seen roadrunners fly up into trees before, I’d never seen one nesting. As we watched it watching us, I was able to get a few photographs. It was late in the afternoon so the light was fading. Plus we didn’t want to bother it, so rather than fidget around trying to get the perfect portrait, we just led it be. What a treat - brilliant camouflage at work again! This photo was taken on December 20, 2017, in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona about 50 miles south of Phoenix.
