Description
Contrails are classified as a type of cloud by meteorologists even though they are formed primarily by vapor from jets mixing with the atmosphere and other clouds. I live in a remote area of the Sonoran Desert of Arizona southwest of Phoenix where jets leave a high concentration of contrails in the sky. When mingled with the desert air, they create awesome and sometimes very elaborate shapes and patterns, but this particular afternoon was extreme. The atmospheric conditions must have been ripe for this spectacular display. Looks like a special sky spirit of some kind is right in the middle, spiraling and shape-shifting into what looks like a white funnel or tornado! I wish some meteorologist would explain that one to me. Cloud Kachina was having a crazy dance, that’s for sure. I mostly capture these moments in the late afternoon so that the clouds are beautifully alighted by the wondrous colors of the sunset and twilight. This captured occurred about 6:30 PM on March 23, 2019.
