Description
This American Coot (Fulica americana) had just resurfaced with a snack in its beak. I took this photograph at Boyce Thompson Arboretum State Park in southern Arizona on March 17, 2018. Coots are fascinating waterfowl because they do not have webbed feet and their beaks are more like a chicken's than duck's. This one was the other half of a mated pair casually gliding about on Ayer Lake with the occasional dive for an aquatic snack. Very graceful and lovely to watch!
