Description
One late summer afternoon (August 24, 2017), I came across this scene while hiking near my home in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona. It’s a remote location about 50 miles south of Phoenix - pretty wild and very pretty! Because of the awesome variety of desert vegetation highlighted by the sunshine of the golden hour, I decided to name it “Cactus Kingdom.” Just
some of the fascinating desert plants and cacti in this photo: the unmistakable giant saguaro, palo verde, creosote, ocotillo, chain fruit or “jumping” cholla, and barrel cactus. The hills in the background are studded with saguaro and cholla. And the tall young saguaro in the foreground is embraced by a beautiful palo verde tree that most certainly served and sheltered it in its role as nursery plant in this most diverse of all deserts on the North American continent - the Sonoran Desert.
